Mr. B.K Gurbani, Chairman Sampre Nutritions Ltd.

I have started my career, lets say, for a whisky factory, 22 years ago. There was a person called Sampat, Production In-charge in that factory and he was the main inspiration and I call him as my guru who has taken initiative by giving me ideas to get into the own business and it was very difficult scene when you are earning about a 1000rs salary and livelihood and everything depending on that and taking a risk for going in to the own business is difficult.

But fine, I’ll thank Mr. Sampat and today for your information flagship company by name Sampre Nutritions. So I have started from a small tiny sector, or you can say my beginning of the confectionery industry from my house kitchen, and I would like to demonstrate an example for you.

Lollipop Machine

Then we have taken a small shop maybe about 300sqft. Both my brothers and me started this. These machines are positioned right from past 22yrs just opposite my chair. This reminds me ‘look Mr. Gurbani this is real it, who u r, not what u r today.’ Hard work doesn’t work alone it has to blessed by blessings otherwise it doesn’t work, ex for hard work is if you see Hamali, the highest hard worker, highest physics, at the end of the day what he earns, its not a hard work alone its destine which plays its luck also plays everything, luck doesn’t mean that if I am not lucky let me not put efforts, and if I m lucky let me relax.

Apart from luck it is 60% blessings and rest all is your hard work and also association wit people, your leadership quality also plays imp role. See in your house you may have seen your younger sister dominate and has the leadership qualities and has more say in the house; your younger brother and even your father listens to her, the elder brother is a calm person, not that he is not intelligent but lacks leadership quality,

Another factor for success is your risk taking capability. Another way for success is if your parents or grandparents are filthy rich persons who left you a great property, where your luck and hard work doesn’t count.

Crafting your own future is slow and steady understanding and implementing.

Understand what your doing, think twice or 4 times. If three times your answer is ‘yes, you are doing right’, then you’ll get success. If 3 times your answer is ‘no yaar what I’m doing is wrong’ then think again whether you’ll venture into this or not. There is saying ‘success has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan’.

Example: When I have started this it has gone and the next stage Semi automatic machine third stage Automatic machine and today touchwood by the grace of god we are the only company in the country having some kind of those specialized machines which even Multi National Companies don’t have. We work with Cadbury, Morgan, Cipla, Nestle, and Indian Airlines; you name any confectionery manufacturing, we give them the products under their brand name for domestic as well as the export market.

So ‘success has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan’.

Look, I have told Brahma you do this business and see where he is today. Then the people who were not in the periphery also they will also take attention, Yes Sir Brahma is my good friend. I told them that those days he was in confectionery servicing which is a good line, and you see he has taken my advice where he his now. God forbidden, his venture has lost. I have told him yaar why you are doing so. It’s the same people, not different people from any other city or country. I told him unnecessarily you are getting into this, which is not worth it. He was happy in the service where he has no timings. This is a normal phenomenon with everyone.

We have to ask our conscious end of the day when we go to bed just replay, action replays workout like what I have done is it right or wrong; its by nature, and it is applicable for everybody. God will never ask rich people to take more breath or poor to take no breath, god doesn’t give you uneven life. That’s nature; this is what by nature there is no disparity in whatsoever,

First we have to establish ourselves, most people think about their own business for their own benefits they don’t think for society,

We have go to next step on the deed not external surface, it’s not the person it’s his deed. For example my car driver is not pleasant but while driving we can see his ability. In my factory I have handicapped person who was very confident of his job. I gave him a chance to prove his ability when some people spoke against him. Later he succeeded.

Today we have 4 manufacturing facilities specialized in the confectionery now we have diversified in to pharmacy and cosmetics, we manufacture shampoos gels lotions, we have tie up with Himalaya company, so we manufacture Himalayas protein shampoos, lotion in our plant. We have 450 people out of which 100 are staff and 350 are workers.

The person who leads the organization must have the subject knowledge, you should not underestimate anybody, everybody is a born leader; sometime even small children will give u a good advice we haven’t even thought of.

Ex: Book on Sir Isaac Newton, he constructing house for a cat and kitty and he has made two doors. One big one for the cat and the small one for the kitty, then his 6 yr old daughter came and asked him why there are two doors, He said that the big one is for the cat and the small one is for kitty, then she said that the kitty can also enter thru the big door; A person like Isaac Newton also had not thought of that idea which his daughter has given.

Ex: I have a given a costly machine to a new recruit, he broke the machine because he didn’t know how to operate the machine, it cost me 50000rs his salary is 5000rs fine he has done a mistake, he will learn from it, give him a chance to improve. He was working with me since 1987. Or if I remove him immediately and gave chance to new person what is the guarantee that he doesn’t do half the mistake if not full. How many people will I change?

If my driver made an accident to my car and I removed him who will drive the car, I can afford a Mercedes Benz today, but I cannot drive the car continuously for 100kms, it is the driver who knows my car.

Our hand has five fingers, it’s a good example of teamwork, and we can’t eat food if anyone of the fingers is missing.

There was an in-born quality consciousness in me. In my childhood I never went to the school without ironed clothes. So this consciousness helped me reach this level. U must have heard of ISO 9000. Then there is a latest HACCP (hazard analysis of critical control parameters in manufacturing) certification, which is the international cert for food industry. To ensure that food we manufacture wont have any kind on contamination whatsoever, because it is directly related to the health. Whether you believe or not I was the first company in confectionery sector in SE ASIA that has got ISO for this category. And then we have became the first HACCP certified company in 2000, first Food Company in India, biscuits bread jam tea juices etc., but none of the Food Giants gone for HACCP. How I was inspired for the HACCP is: it was late 1999 I heard this name when I met Feroz Alana in his factory told me to go to HACCP certification. I made a note of this in my recorder, which I carry everywhere, so that not to miss any thing.

I called my quality manager; his name is Ajit and enquired about it. He told me about it. I took the initiative and went ahead. I got this certification from Holland Agency. It was very difficult to get that certification. Key Factors in Success: Responsibility with authority gives you results. Give value to a person’s advice however small he may be. Give chance to people even if thy commit big mistakes. Teamwork. Dealing with People is difficult, and I am doing that. If you have subject knowledge, nobody can fool you.
